The metasurface is comprised of electronic-photonic chips and antenna elements. When illuminated with an optical wave that has been encoded with mm-wave carrier and data signals, the metasurface radiates a data-carrying mm-wave beam which can be scanned in space (GC grating coupler, PD photodetector, TIA trans-impedance amplifier).
